OR-C-2026-003 · CORRECTION
THE PUBLISHED CLAIM
Ugarit attests seventy sons of El.
THE CORRECTED BOUNDARY
The text reads seventy sons of Athirat. El as their father is an inference.
THE CORRECTION · WHY THE CLAIM MOVED
KTU 1.4 vi 46 names Athirat—Asherah. El as father is inferred from her being his consort; it is not what the tablet says.
Also ours, also stated in conversation first. The wider parallel is weaker than usually presented: Deuteronomy 32:8 does not say seventy; the number is imported from Genesis 10, yielding 70 in the Masoretic text but 72 in the Septuagint.
THE RECORD STATE
